Bibliographic Roadmap

Work to make vocabularies work across systems

Work to make vocabularies work across systems - create and manage mappings; work on diversity issues, such as how to connect bibliographic data to scientific data; explore exchange formats and application profiles.

Some considerations are: mapping challenges, data inconsistency, directions, vocabularies, etc. as described in https://sites.google.com/site/nisobibrm/breakout-group-interoperability

Improve the ability of our data to be consumed and manipulated

Improve the ability of our data to be consumed and manipulated by machines (e.g. limit assumptions about consumers/users)

A strategy emphasized in order to improve interoperability between existing systems and standards, enable better visibility of library data (bibliographic data) for end users on the web, enable use by a broader variety of users and systems with no boundaries, enhance collaborative and shared infrastructures... more »

Behaving like a startup

During the BookExpo meeting, the President of Bloomsbury publishing said (paraphrasing), "Any company that isn't behaving like a start-up is doomed". What does this mean? How can a large institution be more nimble, act more quickly, adopt new tech more easily? What can be learned from startups and what can be avoided?

Bibliographic Roadmap

Create prototypes to determine format/interaction issues

Create prototypes to tease out what needs to be addressed by interchange formats and what needs to be addressed by interactions between systems (API calls). Prototypes should include different models: complete import of data; just linking; hybrids.

Further explore rules-related challenges

Given the impact of rules, authority issues, where core, basic data is required; there is a need for extensibility/scalability; and data and standards are dynamic, should we:

identify the scale of the problem; determine its starting point; determine format and cataloging rules; manage semantic vocabularies and content through application community profiles; determine question of how one size can fit all (libraries,... more »

Overview of current discovery service landscape

Recent talks by Oren Beit-Arie have reminded me that the current discovery service landscape (specifically that of information providers in centrally-indexed search products) is very similar to the first years of participation in OpenURL. Maybe a webinar that could look at the current state of discovery services and remind people that, according to previous examples, it WILL change.

Streaming video

Issues:
• Copyright (UCLA made BBC Shakespeare series available online to students without paying additional fees over original purchase. Sued/judge decided in favor of UCLA but is being appealed)
• Cataloging -- ALCTS did webinar on cataloging streaming media already, so don’t need to cover this in any depth
• ILL
• Media/equipment services (streaming from own server or provider’s server)
• Access: through catalog, by... more »
